Pastor Nolton, in his letter of July 14, stated that Mormons were not part of Christianity. He also stated that Mormons teach that men can become gods and that God was once a man.

On July 21, Ms. Foster stated in her letter that Mormons were Christians, but they rejected the creeds developed in the third and fourth centuries. She also said that Mormons don’t teach that men become gods and that Nolton misunderstood Latter-day Saints’ beliefs.

A note to Ms. Foster: Joseph Smith, the founder of LDS, believed that exalted men become gods. See Doctrine & Covenants 132:19-22. Also see “Mormon Encyclopedia” under “Godhead.”

Mr. Shields, in a letter of July 21, agreed with Ms. Foster. He said that the reason Nolton and others don’t include Mormons in traditional Christianity is because they are not traditional Christians.

Now, I’m a Jew and don’t wish to take sides among the many denominations and groups who call themselves Christians. As I read these letters with several Jewish friends, we agreed that if a person says he or she is a Christian, we’ll just accept that, since there are 33,000 Christian denominations in 238 countries and over 6,000 in the U.S. according to “The World Christian Encyclopedia.” We therefore don’t take a stand on who is a Christian and who isn’t.

Christianity teaches that Yeshua (Jesus) formed the church. He did not. Yeshua is a Jew, as were all of the Apostles including Rav Sha’ul (Paul the Apostle). They never ceased being part of Judaism and never ceased keeping Torah. Christians consider Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah, yet they refuse to follow many of his teaching. They generally reject the Sabbath and the holy days such as Passover, Pentecost and Tabernacles. Various groups have added many practices that are not mentioned in scripture.

My Jewish friends and I just shake our heads at the whole thing. We have many Christian friends but refuse to take sides when they differ. We believe that Yeshua is the Jewish Messiah, and we believe that since the whole Bible was written entirely by Hebrews over a period of 1,500 years, it can only be fully understood by those with a Jewish mindset.
