As people around Lodi watched a variety of college football bowl games or nursed hangovers from Thursday's New Year's celebrations, dozens of Buddhist worshipers attended a service at Lodi Buddhist Church on Friday morning, where they reflected on the memories and experiences of the previous year and decade, as well as what 2010 will bring.
Members of the congregation participated in the ceremony designed to help them start 2010 with pure spirits before partaking in the Shogatsu, the Japanese celebration of the New Year. At the Shogatsu, families travel from house to house on New Year's Day, sampling traditional foods like sushi, daikon and kuromame. Before they could enjoy the feast and time with loved ones, they gathered in the church to pay homage and focus on the transitional nature of life.
