- Rev. Katsuya Kusunoki is big baseball fan
-
When he's not conducting services or teaching Dharma classes,
the Rev. Katsuya Kusunoki is a huge baseball fans.
A catcher, Kusunoki plays for Lodi's team in the
Japanese-American Citizens League, where he plays against teams
from Sacramento, Fresno, the Bay Area and other locales.
His ministerial duties cause him to miss some games. The Lodi
team usually plays doubleheaders each Sunday, so if the team is
playing on its home field at Kofu Park, Kusunoki makes it for the
second game of the day.
Not only does Kusunoki enjoy playing baseball, but he watches it
as well. He has seen Seattle Mariners superstar Ichiro Suzuki play
in Japan and when the Mariners visit Oakland, and he saw Oakland
A's outfielder Hideki Matsui when he played Japanese baseball.
Last year, Kusunoki was fortunate enough to be at the Oakland
Coliseum the day that Stockton native Dallas Braden threw a perfect
game for the A's.

Katsuya Kusunoki had a definite learning curve when he became
minister of the Buddhist Church of Lodi. That's because he's
participating in his first ministerial assignment, and he's lived
most of his life in Japan.
Kusunoki, who will turn 34 in August, wanted to leave Japan and
see the world. He was a volunteer baseball coach for two years in
Zimbabwe in a Japanese program similar to the Peace Corps in
America.
