Galt and Lodi youths ages 12 to 17 were among 300 area teens who donned pioneer clothes last week and pushed handcarts for three days over the Mormon Emigrant Trail in the Sierras.

These modern-day pioneers were part of what became known as "The Trek," inspired by Jim Cook, president of the local stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and includes wards, or congregations, from Galt, Lodi and the foothills. He wanted the youths to develop gratitude and an appreciation for their ancestors who had gone before.
