Letter: Minds are changed from within, not by others

In this called life, I hear many comments about religion. The world “religion” means “belief.” If one speaks and states, “I have no belief,” that is their religion. The word “Islam” means “belief.”

I hear comments about those who follow the teaching of Buddha. It is actually a way of life, and one can have other beliefs.

So in truth, the basic law here in the United States is freedom of belief. I will change no one’s faith or belief. That can only be done by oneself.

There are as many planets in space as the atoms on earth, and what’s on it each day. Infinity, a word with my few years of life and knowledge I cannot describe. With odds like this I dare not say how many planets there are in space. Nor can I deny the fact that there are beings out there. Yes, I would be a fool to deny that a supreme being is out there.

I will not or cannot change anyone’s mind, yet many try to change mine. They do not believe in anything, and want all to think like they do.

This letter will cause comment but change no mind.

Oskar Johanson

Allow me to be the first to comment by saying how much I enjoyed your article. That Buddha is a way of life and that the word Islam means religion. I didn't know that. As a Catholic some would argue that that's what I've always been taught since birth. So that's why I believe, Baptism, religious training.etc. As I am nearing my 60's now I can remember the times I've drifted away, through no ones fault but my own , but came back because I know there is a God. It is written on my heart. As well as everyone's if they choose to feel it. It's it's their choice, God will not force it, but it is there. I've had many people try to change my mind as well. Didn't work. I know it won't with you either.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
