Addressing ministers of his day, C.H. Spurge said: “Some of you have never preached on election since you were ordained. The peculiarities of Calvinism are concealed. These things you say are offensive. And so gentleman, you would rather offend God than you would offend man. But you say it would be dangerous, what God’s truth dangerous? I should not like to stand in your shoes when you have to face your Maker on the day of Judgment after such an utterance as that.

“If it be not God’s truth, let it alone. But if you believe the thing, out with it. Keep back nothing; tell the whole gospel out. Tell out man’s responsibility; do not stutter at it. Tell of divine sovereignty; do not refuse to talk of election, use the word, even if man sneer.”

Christ is more than a Savior. He is salvation itself. David said, “The Lord is my light and my salvation.” It is well to see salvation in the work, life and death of Christ, but we must never forget that the essence of salvation lies in His Person. He Himself is Salvation! It is who He is which gives virtue to what He does. We are bidden to come, not to His work, but to Himself. The gospel loses much of its sweetness when the person of Christ is put in the background and honor is given only to His

work. He is mighty to make the man who hates holiness love it, and constrain the despiser of His name to bend the knee before Him.

Faith which is the gift of God, that faith which comes through hearing the word of God, this faith causes without exception, to renounce themselves and trust entirely in Christ the Savior. This faith causes self to be abhorred and Christ to be adored. God will never allow man’s works, no matter how small — including the doctrine of man’s so-called free will — to mar His sovereign grace in the salvation of His elect (Romans 11: 5-7).
