Excellent, truthful and beautifully written letters by Tom Baker and John Cooper on Oct. 12 in the Lodi News-Sentinel. It’s not often the nail is driven so straight and true.

The letters to the editor are indicative of our understanding of the issues affecting us, and demonstrates our perspective or world view, i.e., how we see or interpret those symptoms or signs, or not.

Our letters discuss and debate politics, business ethics and religiosity, and the deeds and reputations of the players in these games, but rarely do we touch the nerve of cause and solution. My dear old dad would’ve said, “You can’t fix something if you don’t know why it isn’t working.”

Scripture records Christ’s words to the Pharisees concerning the signs of the times they asked him to show them. He chided them they could predict the weather by the color of the sky, yet couldn’t discern the signs of the times. He further said a wicked and adulterous generation sought a sign, but none would be given except the sign of the prophet Jonah. And, what is the sign of Jonah but Jesus Christ Himself?

We cheat ourselves with our ignorance of Holy Scripture; it makes fools of us. It allows the wool to be pulled over our eyes, and renders us stupid and helpless like a sailless sailboat with a broken rudder, bobbing up and down, to and fro, at the whim of wind and wave.

When we see corruption at all levels of government, business and religion permeating our entire world, we can reasonably assume these are symptoms of a much deeper disease.

The sure cause of all social crisis is immorality, and the sure solution is the opposite. Deuteronomy 28: 1-68 explains and sums up the universal law of cause and effect — obedience produces blessing and disobedience produces judgment.

Imagine a world with few or no social crises — no unbelief or idolatry, no fornication and divorce, no theft, lying, violence or murder, no addiction, pornography, abortion and homosexuality. The only thing standing in the way is us. We are the social injustice.
