Communication is a basic human need and the heart of any family and community. That is why the “local print shop” and “church” are the town’s center.

It’s always been true and still is. The local church and newspaper are the building blocks an cornerstone of a community’s foundation — a thermometer and gauge of a community’s health. It is truly the “gate” and “pavement” of the town.

My wise old dad used to say, “Print is the treasure chest of faith and free speech — a pearl of great price.” It’s always a shame and a great loss to lose a precious pearl.

In these day of conglomerate journalism, with their biased agendas, and with instantaneous global Internet access and all that entails, most folks are wired to their iPhones, iPads and tablets and can’t be bothered reading anything but their texts and Facebook messages and playing “Clash of the Clans”; most are simply content with the “bits ’n’ pieces” of truth and the speed of www.com.

It’s rare for a community to enjoy a long-running local newspaper, especially one like the Lodi News-Sentinel, rich in family character and integrity. Thank you all for doing such an excellent job.

The God-given freedoms of faith and speech are the parents of a free press.
