Letter: Of course poverty is a faith issue

You asked community members of faith or not, “Is poverty a faith issue?” Of course it is. There are two universal laws upon which all the others rest; love God above all things with our whole heart, mind, soul and strength; and love our neighbor as ourself. Without this love of and for God, we cannot love our neighbor and without love of neighbor we cannot love God. Why else would anyone care about another poor suffering soul?

It is written that “the poor are always with us,” and certainly we realize we are unable to feed, clothe and heal all the worlds’ impoverished. So, why do we try, why do we care? There are only two reasons why we care about the poor; for God’s glory or our own, for example, either out of faith in God or to be seen as humanitarian and philanthropic. In other words, only the motive and intention of our heart tells the tale; either we’re motivated by love or affection. My dear old dad used to aptly say, “Without faith, who cares?”

"for God’s glory or our own, for example, either out of faith in God or to be seen as humanitarian and philanthropic."

Is it just me, or does this letter express an incredibly morally bankrupt opinion?

Only those who have "faith in God" and help the poor are just, but those who help the poor without faith in God do it for selfish reasons?

If that is correct, then selfishness deserves a lot of credit.
