Letter: I wish the United States was a true Christian nation

Since when is our nation a Christian nation, or that our Founding Fathers were true Christian men of God? I wish this were true, and I know God wishes it were true.

The founders of this country may very well have been church-going hypocrites like the religious right-wing, non-conservative, politically-motivated Tea Party radicals infecting our churches today. As I understand it, two of the men connected with the founding of this country, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine, were avowed atheists. Hitler and his Nazis were extreme right-wing radicals, too, lest we forget.

As for being conservative, my mom and dad were conservatives but they weren’t politically motivated or radical. If they ever voted, they voted Democrat before they would vote Republican.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m neither liberal nor Democrat. I believe in God, not in men and their deceitful politics — money, greed, power. I’m against gay rights and gay marriages, abortion on demand and not-fault divorce between husbands and wives without Biblical grounds.

Christian churches are abandoning God’s precepts, for example “divorce recovery” that some of them advertise. The best divorce recovery for Christians is not to get a divorce in the first place, except for adultery, abandonment or danger to one’s health and well-being. Since when is no-fault divorce without grounds a Christian or even a family value? Can the right-wing phonies answer that?

Even the churches that say they are against no-fault divorce rarely preach against it. They’re pretty silent about it. It seems real old-fashioned preaching is extinct in the churches today. They’ve bought into the politically correct “don’t offend anybody” mania that’s swept this country. Jesus Christ wasn’t afraid to offend the hypocrites of his day.

If we truly are not a Christian nation, it’s not too late to become one. But we must put our trust in God and not in men and their rotten-to-the-core politics and new god named money. Right or left, conservative or liberal, Republican or Democrat, without a fear and reverence of God, they will all lead us n the wrong direction.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
