I write to express my profound disappointment that President Bush vetoed the State Children's Health Initiative Program legislation that would have provided health insurance to thousands more children living in our community.

There are nearly 14,000 children in San Joaquin County without health insurance who could have received coverage had this legislation been signed. It may also mean children who now have insurance will lose it.

I deeply regret that the president used one of his extremely rare vetoes on legislation that would have helped so many children without health insurance.

We strongly urge those members of Congress who voted against the bill to change their hearts and vote to override the veto on behalf of America's children.

Stephen E. Blaire

Bishop

Roman Catholic Diocese of Stockton
