Religion letter: Focus on repentance on National Day of Prayer

Editor: On May 4 about 40 followers of Jesus gathered on the National Day of Prayer. We didn’t pray for federal, state or local government officials, for police and firemen, teachers and school administrators, nor our military. While these are areas that we definitely should be praying for and what most National Day of Prayer gatherings focus on, our prayer time was spent on something else — repentance.

Religion letter: Why is the world the way it is?

Editor: Thoughtful people usually ask this question fairly early in life. When we look around at the stunning goodness displayed in creation — the immensity of the universe; the shimmering brightness of the stars and galaxies; the awesome radiance of the sun; the dazzling splendor of electric blue skies; the breathtaking, hills, plains, valleys, and mountains; the fascinating seas, rivers, and bodies of water; the amazing diversity of animal life; the exquisite and mysterious beauty of the human body— we cannot help but wonder why so much tragedy attends it all. Storms, earthquakes, violence, chaos, wars, sickness, plagues, death — wherever we look, we see good and evil, righteousness and wickedness, repentant and unrepentant rebels. Why is it this way? The answer is God's decrees.

Religion letter: Believers should consider beauty, significance of holy days

Editor: Soon, Believers will gather to celebrate Pesach/Passover, Nissan 14. Many denominations are joining with our Jewish brothers around the world. This High Day is so important to observe and honor, a second Day was given in the next Jewish month, Omer 14, if you were unable to attend (Numbers 9:10).

Religion letter: Changes to Catholic Mass are not heresy

Editor: As a product of sixteen years of Catholic education, including seminary, I was disturbed by the letter about the Latin Mass. Anyone who thinks that changes in recent years like the English (or Spanish) Mass, altar girls, and standing for Communion, after 20 centuries of tradition, make for heresy and “slavery to liberalism” and some New World Order, is simiply misguided and ignorant about what religion is.

Religion letter: Time for California to call the rainmaker

Editor: Parable: There was a great drought. For months there had not been a drop of rain and the situation became catastrophic. The Catholics made processions, the Protestants made prayers and the Chinese burned joss-sticks and shot off guns to frighten away the demons of drought, but with no result.

Religion letter: Communism is a separation from God

Editor: As the Cross has “2” “witnesses,” true justice and mercy, so does Communism: 1) Total governmental control which, in turn, demands 2) Total atheism — removal of Divine worship.

Religion Letter: Sen. McCarthy was a true hero

Editor: We honor a severe adulterer with an American holiday; yet we crucify a true hero who simply tried to tell the Truth, Sen. Joseph Raymond McCarthy.

Letter: Climate change and the Catholic Church

When I learned that Pope Francis was preparing a Papal encyclical on the topic of our endangered environment worldwide, I was encouraged that the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, a man who has the ability to influence more than 1.2 billion Catholics, was taking a stand on the importance of this subject. An encyclical, in the modern sense, is a “brief” that deals with significant issues within the faith.

Letter: Man will not come to Christ, the Holy Spirit leads him there

Let us see how God works by His Spirit in our hearts to bring us to Christ and translate us from the kingdom of darkness, the kingdom of Satan, into the kingdom of Christ, thereby making us spiritual children of Abraham, the true Israel of God.

Letter: Humans are not descended from animals

The headline from an article in the Los Angeles Times claimed “Evidence of first known murder — 430,000 years ago” — a date, of course picked out of thin air. The article was printed in the Lodi News-Sentinel on May 29, 2015.

Letter: A traditional Catholic perspective on marriage

What is marriage? So-called modern Christianity will tell you that it is simply the union between a man and woman (essentially natural law). But if you truly understand the Traditional Catholic perspective, it is much narrower. It is a Sacrament instituted by Christ to give Grace.

Letter: Israel belongs to the Jews

It is written that God made a covenant with Abram (Abraham) and gave him and his progent, the Jewish people, the “Promised Land,” or “Holy Land”... the “Land of Milk and Honey,” Israel. It is recorded in the Scriptures this land grant stretched from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates.

Letter: Truth has become intolerance

The Lodi News-Sentinel headline of May 1 asked an interesting question, “When does a word become a slur?” The definition of the word slur: to stain, smear, smirch or sully, to blur or blot, to disparage or discredit, reproach or stigmatize, to cast aspersions on, anything harmful or intended to be harmful to a person’s reputation. The answer to the question, of course, is words become slurs when we want them to be.

Letter: San Francisco Bishop should stand firm

Being critical of San Francisco’s Bishop for effusing overconfidence in a wayward Supreme Court, it is only fair to now praise him and Father Joseph Illo for following Traditional Catholic teaching.

American churches need a revival of the Holy Spirit

There have been some issues in the news recently that are very telling. First, our President, who just can’t get himself to say the words “Islamic terrorist,” has absolutely no problem bashing Christians whenever he gets a chance. Additionally, he is bent on making an agreement with Iran regarding its nuclear program without any regard for Israel. Finally, the major outcry over Indiana’s RFRA law is startling considering twenty nine states already have RFRA laws or RFRA protections, and the Federal Government passed a RFRA law in 1993 (sponsored by liberal Democrat Charles Shumer and signed into law by President Clinton).

Acknowledge sin before achieving salvation

Terrible indeed was the condition and action of this criminal. On the very brink of eternity he unites with the enemy of Christ in the awful sin of mocking Him.
