Letters: Catholic symbols are not worship subjects

The Roman and Eastern Orthodox Catholic Churches provide crucifixes, icons, murals, statues and symbols as visual aids for prayer, meditation, contemplation and recollection. Just as pictures of departed family members and friends placed on walls and shelves serve to remind us of our love for them, and may evoke prayers for them, so does an object of religious subjects or persons prompt thoughts and memories.

Letter: Water, sin and salvation are powerful things

Water is a powerful thing. Without it nothing lives; to much of it, everything dies. Water baptizes into life and drowns unto death.

Letter: Grace Baptist Church offers Scripture-based teaching

Grace Baptist Church of Woodbridge stands as a choice for those who seek deeper understanding of Scripture in a caring and supportive church family. Any believer who wants discipleship, teaching and evangelism as life tenets based on the inerrancy of the Scriptures now has another place to build an in-depth spiritual education alongside others in the Body of Christ.

Letter: Facts about the true election of grace

Two comments on my last letter, “What Jesus has done for me,” March 8, were asking what is election? I would like to explain this.

Letter: Science is proving Earth had a definite beginning

Astronomers announced on March 17 that polarization of the cosmic background radiation shows that the primordial light had passed through regions of intense gravitational waves, a prediction of cosmic inflation theory.

Letter: Virgin Mary was not just another woman

Those who say the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, was just another woman should consider the bonds all children have with their mothers. They carry their mother’s mitochondrial DNA and the mothers carry each of their children’s natal cells.

Letter: We need level heads, God and cooperation to improve our economy

It is refreshing to read a letter to the editor from somebody who seems to have a level head for a change. I’m referring to Ron Portal’s letter to the News-Sentinel, “It’s time to stop the assault on our personal liberties,” Feb. 11.

My mom died today (March 3, 2014). A child of the living God, Pauline was 94. Of course we knew it was coming. I thought I was ready.

Letter: A reader shares an old news article about Noah’s Ark

I found a news article that I had clipped out of the Lodi News-Sentinel on Feb. 22, 1974. The title above the article says, “Photos show Noah’s Ark.” Sen. Frank E. Moss, D-Utah, stated that photos taken by a U.S. satellite may be pictures of Noah’s Ark.

Letter: Man’s will is always at odds with God’s will for us

The Associated Press article “Methodists torn over gay marriage,” Feb. 15, tells the tale for Christendom’s condition on the whole. A tale of unspeakable sadness for our lack of knowledge and our error. We die for our lack of knowledge and we are accountable for our error.

Letter: There can be no saints from post-Vatican II church

Many have a wrong notion that apostasy is outright total rejection of Most Holy Triune God. No, “modernism” is actually the most dangerous form of apostasy. It stays within the church to corrupt through compromise.

Letter: We should indeed pray for rain

The wisdom of your front page headline, “Praying for rain,” Jan. 4, is insightful, truthful and powerful. Indeed, prayer is a powerful thing and rightfully we can go nowhere but to the source of our provision and sustenance.

Christ is more than a Savior

Addressing ministers of his day, C.H. Spurge said: “Some of you have never preached on election since you were ordained. The peculiarities of Calvinism are concealed. These things you say are offensive. And so gentleman, you would rather offend God than you would offend man. But you say it would be dangerous, what God’s truth dangerous? I should not like to stand in your shoes when you have to face your Maker on the day of Judgment after such an utterance as that.

We must pray for rain

No rain, no rain, that is the million-dollar question. The scientists talk about this inversion layer covering California and blocking the storms coming our way. Enough is enough. We all need to get down on our hands and knees and pray that God in His divine mercy sends us much needed rain.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
