This is in regards to the fire at Larry and Toni Miller’s house on Sept. 18. There were seven fire departments that responded that day, and during the course of extinguishing and securing their home and the few remains, I saw compassion at its best. The firefighters doing this incredible job showed such respect for the few objects they were able to rescue from the house.
As a homeowner, watching your life burn uncontrollably and to be able to have a fireman come out of the rubble with a precious clock, lamp or knick-knack that was a family heirloom or has sentimental meaning is priceless. I watched the firemen carry out items like this with such respect and gentleness that my heart was moved to send this letter to say, thank you.
Some of these firemen spent more than a day there to take care of the needs of all. I want to especially thank the young fireman who was bringing the items out of the house with such respect for what this family did have left. Also, Brandon Wright of the Mokelumne Fire Department, for all the long, hard work he did, and for recognizing Toni as his former high school teacher.
Please keep Larry and Toni in your prayers. Imagine starting over again in your 70s. They can do it with our help.
