Letter: How is killing innocent animals conservation?

I was appalled by what I saw on the sports page of the Aug. 24 edition of the Lodi News-Sentinel. I believe in the Second Amendment — the right to keep and bear arms — as a means to protect your family.

Does that give you the right to kill defenseless animals, e.g. a rhino? This animal has very poor eyesight and can’t even see his killer. Are they not endangered?

A grizzly bear? What was the purpose of that? Just so you could brag to your buddies about your trophy kill?

An elephant? When you kill this animal, it changes the whole dynamic of its herd. They grieve over the loss of their loved one just like we do. So which one was it? The patriarch or matriarch of the herd, or perhaps a sister or daughter?

And last but not least, the bull moose. Did you eat the meat, or did you have it stuffed and mounted so you could admire it daily?

The most disturbing part of the whole story is that you’re teaching your children to kill as well. I pray that your children’s children will have a beautiful animal that they can watch grow up.

I would love for you, Mr. Bruce, to explain why you think killing innocent animals is about conservation.

There is a large population of folks that enjoy hunting and reading about people that also share their interest. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but so are they entitled to share their interest. Don't like it -don't read it, but please do not try to impose your beliefs on everyone else by silencing them. "Animal overpopulation occurs when an ecosystem is unable to support the existing wildlife because there are too many of a given species. The environment suffers due to the strain from the natural activities of the overpopulated species. The results can be devastating as animals scrape for food and wander into unnatural habitats in search of something to eat. Disease is also a factor as the ecosystem makes a final attempt to regain a natural balance and order. Overpopulated animal species lead difficult lives with limited resources. "
