Tell us how to protect ourselves
I am not gifted with the compassion, understanding or the investigative capacity to understand the Connecticut school tragedy. What I do know is that elementary through college schools ruled "no guns" and "safe" is insanity! We can drug our population; however, we cannot identify dangerous, psychotic people posing a danger to others and themselves.
In reality, we need armed guards in public facilities. This is a step that would save lives.
U.S. towns that have "carry laws" have a much lower incidence of violent crime. Criminals become afraid.
Stop feeding us garbage and tell us honestly how to protect ourselves.

In Switzerland, every male adult is issued a firearm. In fact, the standard issue firearm they receive is the same type of scary “assault weapon” that the media in the U.S. demonizes day-in and day-out. Each citizen is also required to have on hand sufficient ammunition for themselves in a time of war and/or to quell any kind of civil unrest. If that weren’t enough, each citizen is also required to spend a specific number of hours of training each year.
The result? Less than one homicide per 100,000 people.
Our homicide rate still hovers around 4.4 per 100,000. [sleeping]

So in Kennesaw it's mandatory to own a gun, unless you don't want to. And, the town of 30,000 has a lot less murders than NYC a city of 8, 244,000. Wow, earth shattering. Also, NYC's murder rate peaked in 1990 and has dropped dramatically. The most precipitous drop happening after 1994. I wonder what gun laws passed in 1994 could have coincided with that? You know another similarly sized town, with a similar murder rate? Newtown, Ct.

Having live in a environment (Vietnam) where everyone was armed I can say that it leads to more death and destruction than not. I am not talking about actual combat. We had 4 people gunned down and killed in a poker game when a loser in that game got angry. We had several accidents that wounded people with one resulting in a death. This is supposedly by people trained in the safe use of firearms. Stateside there was no accidents or deaths because the weapons were locked up. I personally do not own a weapon for two reasons. I know that with weapons accidents happen and is more likely than being in a situation where I need to protect myself. Second ever once in a while I think someone needs shooting. Joking [smile]

Concealed carry prevents more crime than it creates, study says

concealed carry policies on college campuses lead to a reduction in crime, using two Colorado schools as test cases. After the state enacted its concealed carry law in 2003, Colorado State University decided to allow students to carry concealed weapons while the University of Colorado prohibited them. The report found a 60 percent decrease in crime at Colorado
State since 2004, while the University of Colorado saw a 35 percent increase during the same time period.
“(It does not) seem likely that a would-be robber would be deterred because of stickers on the doors announcing that armed robbery is severely frowned upon by the student code of conduct,” the report said. “Conversely, a campus that allows concealed carry, and where even one student, professor, or even a member of the maintenance staff is armed, would present a much riskier target to criminals.”

I agree with the prospect of bringing soldiers home from Afghanistan, but are we ready to militarize our schools? Is creating a police state the right way to go about this? Do we really want to instill that kind of fear in our children... and ourselves?

If we brought everyone home from Afghanistan we would have more than enough bodies to guard our schools and public buildings- and maybe the people being protected would be appreciative of the effort- what a novel idea.
