The tragic shooting of Gulf War veteran Parminder Singh Shergill should not be shouldered solely by the police officers. The way this was handled could have been dealt with differently.

The veteran soldier, having served in the war and experiencing post traumatic stress disorder after returning home, should have had other options available to him besides police assistance — constant counseling on attitude, and mood changes should have been monitored. Different places to call besides the police department should have been available.

This should not have happened. A son and veteran are now gone. The officers that responded have to deal with what happened for the rest of their lives.

So do not pass judgment and blame the officers only. This could have been prevented.
