Let’s study options for the Delta before committing to twin tunnels

Because our state is so awash in debt and unfunded public employees’ pension requirements, it is imperative that we citizens pay attention to projected huge expenditures that will impact our state for years to come. Can we really afford a high-speed railroad that seems more a dream of Jerry Brown’s ego than anything realistically possible in the near future?

The Delta Water Project is another extremely expensive endeavor which has serious consequences for the water quality of the Delta if not done right.

The state government seems totally committed to the BDCP’s proposals. Recently I heard Dr. Robert Pyke, a consultant on geotechnical, earthquake and water resource engineering, give a speech. His Western Delta Intake Concept should be openly and honestly debated in our legislature to come up with the best method to preserve our wonderful Delta.

The WDIC would be located on Sherman Island on the south end of Sacramento County. Sherman Island is now mostly owned by the State of California. All waters (rivers, streams, island pump outs, run-off, etc.) must pass through the Delta to the WDIC site. Due to all of the water passing through the Delta, monies for Delta infrastructure will remain in the Delta. WDIC is half the distance to the state and federal pumping stations; thus a huge reduction in construction costs and mitigation costs. WDIC’s permeable embankments are far more efficient and effective than other fish screen proposals, which are ineffective or unproven.

Due to all waters passing through the Delta — and the inclusion of additional storage which allows true Big-Gulp operation — southern water users would receive more water over the long haul versus BCDP’s proposal. WDIC is self-regulating, meaning overpumping of water at any time will result in too much brackish (salt) water. The pumps must be turned down or shut off as a result of too much brackish water.

Please contact your Assemblyman or State Senator. Ask them to investigate this WDIC proposal before committing huge outlays for BDCP’s plans, which may not be the best solution for the Delta.

The Bay Delta Conservation plan admittedly will destroy 23,000 agriculture jobs due to the "retirement" of ag land and converted to habitat.

The only way I see building this monstrosity is if there is a meter on it. If the South is going to rape the North, the least we can do is make them pay for the privilege.
