We were given the right to protect our liberties

A very wise William Penn wrote in 1683, "Liberty without obedience is confusion, and obedience without liberty is slavery." It can be further said there is no liberty without the means to defend it.

On Dec. 15, 1791, our "Framers," determined to safeguard our hard-won rights, along with many Americans, accepted our new government on the condition that provision be made for the protection of our "first liberties," or fundamental rights against usurpation by the newly created federal government. They created a Bill of Rights to amend our Constitution with the intent to ensure our new federal government wouldn't interfere in matters of religion, speech, press, assembly and our bearing of arms.

The Second Amendment succinctly states, "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Also, the Ninth and Tenth Amendments importantly reject a centralized federal government with the stance that the Bill of Rights should not be used to deny the people the rights which we already possess, and that the federal government shouldn't intrude into the people's issues of life, liberty and property.

The right to armed self-defense was conferred by God as the means of protecting all other God-given rights. It is even written that Jesus told the disciples to buy a sword and pray not to have to use it. It's the same with firearms — keep and bear them, pray not to need them, and using discernment, avoid trouble.

It's said that no walls are needed to imprison a man whose mind has been enslaved, and his means of self-defense eliminated. An example is Hitler's confiscation of arms and the means to acquire them from the Jews just prior to WWII. This is true for any dictator and petty tyrant, including our own beneficent tyrant Obama.

We are never freer than when we possess the means to defend our freedom.

Jerome, since you have the gutz to show your face I will take the time to correct one mistake you put forth " he still has the Executive Order to help ram through" I don't think he has the power to ram anything through congress. He was totally stuffed by the repubs, just like they promised on the night he was elected... don't you remember ??

Joanne: we must encourage the tea party to continue with their efforts and hopefully expand their membership. There would be no greater gift to the American people than a fragmented, ineffective GOP. However, sad to say it's true, but 2014 or 2016 will be the tea parties final appearance on the national stage. Like every other attempt at a 3rd party, people lose interest unless there is a wedge issue and then that dies out and you end up with more republicans. Not as many as you started with mind you, because it's a dying political operation, attracting very few new members, and certianly fewer and fewer minorities, but more republicans than there were in 2012.

    "we must work"

    OK.

    Work implies action.

    Hanging around here is inaction!

    Fun...

    But bears no fruit!

It is amazing that some people who so desperately wish to appear intelligent eventually display their ignorance of the Constitution by promulgating the idea that pieces of that Constitution can be eliminated or overridden by Executive fiat. This is how those dangerous gun owners who interpret the "right to bear arms" as a right to overthrow the government if things don't go there way.

This was/is the thinking of Timothy McVeigh, Terry Nichols and James Nichols and a whole bunch of crazy militias that train continually with automatic weapons in case they need to mow down the President, Congress and the SC.

The 2014 elections promise to go left. The influence of the TEA Party is waning and it will be dead by the mid-terms. The Grand Old Party is desperately trying to hang on to some vestige of moderation and it must jettison the radicalism of the TEA Party in order to simply survive.

While I agree with the majority of Mr. Van Amber Fields' most recent letter, I'm not quite to the point where I would categorize President Obama as a tyrant, beneficient or otherwise. What the man has planned for us must still pass through Congress; We the People have not yet conceded our Constitution to the whim of one occupant of the White House. That's not to say I'm not worried - I am. Owing to the fact that Barack Hussein Obama is no longer facing another presidential election (despite silly prognosticators who believe he might actually get a shot a a third term), he still has the Executive Order to help ram through those things we might otherwise be able to object to through our elected representatives on Capitol Hill.

Those of us who still believe in freedom and the Bill of Rights must now set our eyes and endeavors on the mid-term election in November of 2014. At the very least we must work to keep the House while possibly snagging the Senate. It may actually come down to how the president behaves over the next two years. But once that election is over depending upon the outcome we might have the worst two years in our nation's history.
