The response offered by Lodi High School Athletic Director Erin Aitkin to the change from Rob Elrod to Courtney Porter as the boys varsity water polo coach represents a very poor model of sportsmanship and leadership; when things don’t go according to your personal desires, blame the rules, blame the ref, blame someone else.

What Ms. Aiken omitted is that there is turbulence in the local swimming and water polo community consisting of very robust competition between one club led by coach Porter and the other by Lodi High swimming coach John Griffin — assisted by Mr. Elrod.

Yes, the competition between the club teams has seeped into the high school pool, but Ms. Aiken’s clear bias for the Griffin/Elrod crew is overshadowing the fact that the student athletes are the big winners here — the girl’s varsity squad getting coach Elrod (an excellent coach) all to themselves, and the boys having the opportunity to be coached by Mr. Porter, who is one of a handful of individuals in the nation to coach (very successfully) at the NCAA Division I level. Go, Flames!
