Is President Obama's employee tax cut a real cut? Normally the Social Security tax withdrawn from your salary is 6.2 percent, while the employer matches the percentage.

Now, you pay 4 percent toward Social Security while the employer pays the full 6.2 percent. In other words, the president required you to take 2 percent from your Social Security savings account. He offered you nothing as your Social Security fund is reduced by that 2 percent.

It is no benefit to the employer, as he pays the same amount as he did before the alleged cut. He just gives you the 2 percent he would normally send to Social Security in addition to your now 4.2 percent contribution. That is why the policy had no effect on unemployment.

Yes, your take-home pay is an extra 2 percent, but it is taken from your Social Security savings. Whether we agree politically with the president, to call this a tax reduction is disingenuous. In tough economic times, rather than providing a real tax break that has gotten us out of past recessions, he forced you to rob your Social Security piggy bank. He then purports to protect Social Security as he robs from it by 2 percent per month per every employee so he can say he reduced taxes!

Manuel stated...The payroll tax cut was a bi-partisan effort to stimulate the economy by giving people improved spending power at present.

That was the snow job explanation for the public. In reality, it was a political ploy democrats used to get votes. They needed to have a story to tell in which they could claim they are not for higher taxes. Since they increase taxes so often and so high, they needed political cover.

A vast majority of Republicans were against this, a vast majority of Democrats were for this.

Regardless of when his parents left Cuba, they were exiles because they stayed in the US, specifically Miami, in a community where they soon felt they couldn't go back to their homeland. Though the story said his parents left for economic reasons, it's silent about the fact that the dictator before Castro, Batista, was so brutal that it made Castro look like a good alternative at first. (Insert debate over the fairness of the post-Castro Cuban Adjustment Act here).

The Post also says "the supposed flight of Rubio’s parents has been at the core of the young senator’s political identity." That's a stretch. The actual story of the "flight" is far less emphasized than the fact that Rubio's an Hispanic Republican, and the child of immigrants and exiles (Update note: I mistakenly called him an immigrant and exile in original post).

So to suggest Rubio serially embellished the "dramatic" story of his parents fleeing Cuba could be a little too dramatic itself. And it might be an embellishment as well -- absent more information clearly showing Rubio has repeatedly said his parents fled Castro's Cuba.

Jerry stated...Ms. Bobin - what a great voice you would be for Libertarians

Im surprised he thinks libertarians are that crazy... I think liberarians would be very insulted to listen to what Ms Bobin has to say... just as any person of good character would.

Ms. Bobin - what a great voice you would be for Libertarians. Reconsider your station in life and denounce Democrats and Republicans alike. Your rhetoric proves my point that they are the same.

to fix his mass is to stick it to the taxpayer and if he is in office come
Jan. 20 God help us because in 2016 when he leaves office the UN
will take over if obama has his way.

But Ms Bobin... the truely gifted people like yourself can make the complex simple... please find it in your heart to explain what to you must be the obvious...

Sorry, Mr. Baumbach, it is too exhausting to continually try to make up for your shortcomings. Google it yourself.

"Senator Marco Rubio?" The same Marco Rubio who claimed that his parents were escaping the Fidel Castro regime and the evils of Cuban communism?

Turns out old Marco's parents left Cuba long before - Castro was still hatching his revolution in Mexico when his parents hit the road to the US.

And why would he say such a thing? Most likely because the name "Castro" has a more powerful effect than saying "the American backed dictator, Batista," and a government that, aligned with the American Mafia, turned Cuba into America's whorehouse.

The objective wasn't to reduce the debt. The payroll tax cut was a bi-partisan effort to stimulate the economy by giving people improved spending power at present.

I disagree with the payroll tax cut for the objections people have raised here (that and it incentivizes the extension of those cuts because the minute we try to return to previous rates, people cry and howl "Tax hike!") but remember what we are talking about when addressing it.

I guess you should have become a teacher like your fantasy wife, Mr. Baumbach. Then you would have gotten the pension you think you deserve.

Now all we ave to do is reduce it another 4.2% and the correct amount taken from each persons pay check would be just about right.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
