Letter: ‘Pass it on’ is a good motto

While out enjoying our beautiful Delta last week, the worst thing that could happen happened. Our boat quit running. To make matters worse, we were on the wrong side of the San Joaquin River, just off Bethel Island; 90 miles of road or 10 miles of water to get back to our launch site.

We (my wife and I) were rowing toward home when a gentleman offered to tow us home for $200 cash. I probably would have paid it, but there was no place to get cash.

After paddling for about 15 minutes, a couple boating by offered to tow us home. On the way, we went by their house with people waiting on the dock for a barbecue. It took about 45 minutes to get back to our launch site. I offered to put gas in their boat but they graciously refused and told us to pass it on.

In more than 40 years of boating, I have been towed in more than once and have towed in more than my share of stranded boaters. “Pass it on” has always been our motto.

I saw the best and worst in the course of a couple of hours. The man who wanted the money had a brand new 50-foot yacht, ski boat and two JetSkis tied up at his dock, in front of a very impressive house. The nice couple had a 26-foot cruiser, and from the looks of it, a modest house on the water.

My thanks to Ray and Pat of Bethel Island, a very nice and I’m sure blessed couple.
