The recently passed bill, AB 711, is headed to Gov. Jerry Brown to be signed into law. The intent is to protect the environment from the lead bullets fired by hunting. The reality is that it has been proven that it is not a health risk to wildlife, that is, the California condor, nor to the public who eat the harvested wild meat.

What it will accomplish is to stop hunting in California and remove the wildlife habitat funding from the Robertson/Pitman Act that provides over $40 million from federal excise taxes on ammunition, firearms and archery equipment. This 10 percent tax was pushed through the federal system — by the hunting public — in 1937, to help develop state animal habitat.

AB 711 will remove over $500 million in tax revenues generated by hunting sales that help fund the Department of Fish and Wildlife, and an estimated $3.5 billion lost revenue from the hunting public and lost related jobs per year. This will be a major blow to the State of California’s wildlife programs.

Please contact Gov. Jerry Brown’s office and ask him to veto this wrong-sighted bill.
