So, the Lodi Police Department is going to start checking immigrant status of arrestees - "Policy to check for illegal Immigrants," News-Sentinel, April 2. Well it's about time! A few years ago, I called the Lodi Police Department to report illegal immigrants at an address in Lodi. The woman who answered rudely responded with "So what do you want us to do about it? Why don't you call the Border Patrol?"

Well, gee, I guess I really didn't expect Lodi's finest to do anything about it. How dumb of me! So I tried to look up the number for the Border Patrol and couldn't find it!

However, with the current cop-out (no pun intended) attitudes of local law enforcement agencies about illegal immigrants, in many areas, it is no wonder that the Border Patrol can't keep up with the tidal wave influx of illegal immigrants that America has been experiencing over the years.

I get a feeling local Lodi businesses and growers want the cheap labor that illegal immigrants offer. Yes, with government subsidies and cheap illegal labor, no wonder farmers can afford to build mansions in the middle of their vineyards and fields outside Lodi.

Perfect, I agree wholeheartedly, however, you must remember that the "illegal" community serves all most all of the local "farmers", with their liquor crop...which we could all do without....

Yes i believe the illegal's are putting a large strain on our society, If we would stop buying from the business that support hireing illegal's & are becomeing rich from them, i think that would hurt them more, stop buying & supporting places that Hire illegal's. Leave if you do not like it. Employment would not be so high. I know of a few Business that stand firm about not Hireing anyone that is not legal & thay take pride in that.

1st illegal aliens broke the law when they crossed the border illegally. Does that make them a criminal? breaking the law?

2nd how many innocent people in Lodi will have to be victims of illegals or even killed by them, before the city has enough money for the training?

It would seem that illegal aliens are, by defacto, above the law, and we are 2nd class citizens in our own state.

In my opinion, this problem should be enforced both locally and at the state level.

John Cooper: excellent topic. I've seen sheriff candidates answering questions on this very same topic. The responses were that funding and units were not provided to check on immigration status, unless a person had broken the law and got arrested. In the process of booking, immigration status would be discovered, but not until then.

Again, it was all about funding. The sheriff and opposing candidate, and supervisorial candidates were all aware of the problem of illegal immigration, but didn't have money to enforce it.

The obvious plans read: we want illegals to stay and patriotic Americans to leave. Wake up Lodi! Before you don't have your town anymore. The Chamber of Commerce has always been Pro-amnesty. Check their National website. And, yes, I think everyone in Lodi knows that there are thousands of illegals here. With businesses like Wells Fargo and BoA accepting the Matrucula Consular ID, an ID that Mexican banks won't accept, they have created a magnet for illegals. Plus you have Savemart with a "we accept Matricula ID for money remittances" in Spanish sign, with 2 taco trucks illegally parked. And Now Sam Miguel Ranch store. Maybe they will build a Tecate Beer factory for them next.

If someone is illegally In America, I do not feel they are entitled to legal represention during deportation proceeding! If it is clear they are illegal, a jail bus should deport them to the border. Sure some would come back, but finger print them all and put them in jail if they are caught again! Do you think for a moment that Mexico would treat us with kid gloves?

Daycare centers, Head start programs, churches, schools, welfare office and Police know where many many illegals reside. But (NO ONE) is doing a thing about it! There are so many illegals, it is obvious to anyone with a brain that we haven't enough jail space, nor foster homes to take in all those arrested and their children! All would demand a hispanic interpreter and a public defender to fight deportation. And the cost? You guessed it, all on us taxpayers! I would love to see the old Wal-Mart made into a ICE detention Center...Plus I would like to add

I am assuming the author is referring specifically to 'illegal "residents"' in his suggestion that non-taxpayers; users of our hospitals, schools, etc. without working 'leave' the country. The sentence is somewhat ambiguous. If read another way, it could be taken that 'in addition' to illegal residents people who fall into those other categories are being invited to leave. Any thoughts?

If we dont start taking care of this immigrant debocle from a grassroots level we are lost! It is time to enforce the law of the land! If you are an illegal resident---LEAVE, if you dont pay taxes---LEAVE, if you use our hospitals, roadways, schools, etc but dont work and pay taxes----LEAVE, you are a drain on society, what are you contributing?
