We recently finished building a house just east of Lodi and we would like to share what a great experience we had.

We started with hiring general contractor Doug Hutmacher, recommended to us by a family member who had him build their house. From day one he went above and beyond to make sure that this house was exactly what we wanted. We felt like he had become part of our family. We wanted to use local contractors and businesses to keep our money local, and Doug had the contacts to do that.

We were so impressed with the networking that went on. These were dedicated, reliable contractors that worked from sun up to sun down, sometimes seven days a week, especially Manuel Freitas, who did all of our concrete work. We would like to thank and highly recommend all of the following: Doug Hutmacher, general contractor; Manuel Freitas Construction, general contractor; Doug Highfill Sr., construction services; Duane A. Burg, Guild Mortgage Company; Willie Davis, Kundert and Bauer Appliances; Scott D. Reed, A.L.S. Roofing and Construction Co.; Mike Belanger, Belco Cabinets, Inc.; Dustin Sterni, West Coast Backhoe Service; Xtreme Plastering; B&W Mechanical, Inc.; Lance Kimes, Continental Tile Co. Inc.; Bob Pinnell, Pinnell's Flooring America; Ashlock Energy; Bob Melhaff, EFX Home Theaters and Security; Fireplace Products and More, Inc.; Foster Lumber; Dieltle Plumbing; Villa Truss; and Lowe's.

We did a lot of homework and research when choosing our appliances and found Willie Davis and his employees at Kundert and Bauer to be the best. Not only did they have the commercial look we wanted, but they also deliver, install and service all they sell.

We did shop at Lowe's for some of the things our locally owned businesses don't carry, and also found them to have very helpful and knowledgeable employees. We were so happy to be spending our money in Lodi, rather then driving to Stockton or another city.

We love our house and are proud to live in Lodi.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
