I enjoyed the article about men’s hats, and personally I’m pleased that they are back in style.

However, there is one thing that disturbs me. Perhaps I’m just an old fuddy-duddy, but do men today know that they are not supposed to wear hats indoors unless it is a part of their uniform?

An interview with one of the hat-wearers indicated that he can wear some styles at work and still look professional. No! A man wearing a hat indoors that is not his uniform is anything but professional.

I know many men who wear hats indoors and out. Some remove them indoors some don't. I like Kevin's explanation below, a nice hx lesson. Many men don their caps because its too much of a hassle to comb their hair. There is one hat that is stupid looking anytime indoors or out. That's the backwards baseball cap. It really gives the impression (to me anyway) you're a goofball. I understand work conditions, like welders and baseball catchers, may dictate an on the job necessity but separate from the job demands it appears ridiculous. Why wear the hat, presumably to keep the sun out of your eyes, if you don't use it for its intended purpose. Even bald heads don't need to have it backward.

But the most ridiculous hat is the cowboy hat when worn indoors. Of course to take it off indoors always leaves that indentation around your head where the hats rests on your hair. Out in the sun all day necessitates you protect yourself from harmful sun rays. But if you are going out to dinner or other non-sunny activity you really look silly. You really look like the Gene Autrys and Roy Rogers I watched as a kid. I really find it hard to talk to someone wearing a cowboy hat and take them seriously. They look Texan and I really find little intelligence from anything Texan (except legislator Wendy Davis). Now there are states and cities where their police wear cowboy hats. To me if they really want to be taken seriously ditch the cowboy hats.

Now ultimately I really don't care what guys wear on their heads (or anything else) but honestly if they want to be taken for more than just a "good ol' boy" consider the impression you may be making. Its not just what you wear but where you wear it that leads to how people react to you. Wearing any hat indoors can leave the same impression on people as burping (or worse) in public. Avoid the urge to pride your self on that rebellious attitude.

Times have changed. Although I remove my hat, there are many others in this modern age who don't.

Wearing baseball type caps in Nova Scotia is looked upon as you are a young person. Not so here in California. Wearing it backwards is unheard of there as well. In Boston wearing jeans places you as a visitor from out of the area. Cowboy hats in Texas means you are not from the save the owl California state but homegrown instead.

What is proper not to wear and when to wear here in this state depends on what you have been taught when you were young. I taught my boys to remove their hats indoors if you are wearing one. I wear one everyday for my lack of hair . Baseball type caps are worn most often for it being less of a problem in tight spaces. A wider brimmed hat is now in order because of burned tops of ears for the sun exposure problems.

Teach your kids to open doors for the gals as well and maybe we will all benefit in the gain of their respect for others . Nothing to loose - everything to gain.

A sidenote: The reason it has become standard for men to remove their hats inside is because during past ages, hats collected dust, coal (industrial revolution) and such. When walking indoors it became polite to remove your hat so it was lower than people's faces so you didn't get dust in their face.

I was always taught to remove your hat inside and just feel odd wearing one inside.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
