It is extremely important for California voters to understand the issues of Proposition 37, and on this one they have an opportunity to influence their long-term health. California voters are confronted with a full frontal assault of deceptive campaigning to try to defeat this Proposition.

On the topic of genetically-modified organisms in our produce section of the supermarket, Proposition 37 requires truth in labeling of GMO foods.

What is GMO? Can you say gene splicing? The foods are literally genetically modified. If an agricultural crop desires insect resistance, production of an insecticide can be programmed into the genes. When insects land on the crop, they die. Good? What happens when we eat this food? Is not the same insecticide still present in the food?

Additionally, the genes are still there. If they can trade off with the friendly bacteria in our gut, these genes can reproduce themselves and continue production of the same insecticide for an indefinite period. This would mean that in people of all ages, including children and elderly, these genes could remain active and reproduce within our gut and cause allergic reactions to an unknown allergen.

How about resistance to herbicide? If an agricultural crop is resistant to Roundup, then why not spray from the air? Then the Roundup would be on the produce. Profitable.

How about if someone has an organic crop and the next-door neighbor is growing a GMO commodity? Can you say cross-pollination?

I have not even discussed the topic of hybridization. For 10,000 years agriculture has never required GMO seed, and now suddenly today big business claims that we need them, and they claim that farmers will suffer if they can’t use it.
