President Obama made no special requests for the graduation at Notre Dame
This is in response to the letter signed by Carolyn Hadden, of
Galt, posing the question, “Is Obama really a Christian?” on July
19.
Ms. Hadden’s letter contained one glaring error, at least. She
stated, “In fact, when Obama went to speak at the graduation at
Notre Dame last year, he said all religious statues, icons and even
the crucifix had to be covered!” This is blatantly untrue! I
checked myself (8:32 a.m. July 19) by calling the Office of the
President at Notre Dame University, and was told by the secretary
answering the phone that this statement was “absolutely untrue.” No
such order was given by President Obama or anyone else. In fact,
the graduation ceremony was held in the football stadium and, as a
practicing Catholic, I can say that it is not the practice of the
Catholic Church to adorn its stadiums with religious statues,
etc.
I heartily support the idea that everyone is entitled to their
opinion, but they have a grave responsibility to check the facts
before making outright statements such as this one about President
Obama.

I find it astounding that Ms Bobin and others state this woman is practicing “ hate speech” for having this opinion. I do not agree with Ms Hadden in this case as I do not know or care if Obama is Muslim, Chistian or an atheist. I only care that his policies help instead of hurt our country.
However, this woman has her opinion just as Ms Bobin thinks I wouldn't recognize a hate filled piece or writing if it hit me over the head In fact, she as implied I am an idiot so often, I have lost count.... I could say many things Ms Bobin states is hate speech, but I do not... I think her “opinion “ is often wrong just as I do Ms Hadden. I think by labeling it hate speech, you diminish freedom of speech. Ms Bobin is free to call people bigots, racists and stupid. That is her opinion... not hate speech. I am free to respond that I think Ms Bobin is mistaken.

Sam Heller is absolutely correct. Mr. Baumbach wouldn't recognize (or admit to) a hate filled piece or writing if it hit him over the head.

She not only believes he is a Muslim, which in her tiny little brain is a VERY BAD thing, she also states that he a Jihadist, AKA terrorist.
If that is not "hate speech," I don't know what is. She then calls out all her fellow Christian warriors to "pray" that he will not be reelected. Why just Christians? Why didn't she mention Jews, Buddhists, and members of any other non-Muslim religion? Because she is an intolerant hater and not worthy of being called a Christian herself.

Darrell, I referrenced Christians in my comment not because I have a problem them (I believe in Christ) but because in her letter Carolyn made a call out to Christians ...
" ...Now he wants to give Israel to the Muslims who will destroy all the Christian Holy sites and eventually the Jews and Christians, too!

I found her comments to be hate-based. Perhaps I am wrong and maybe she is just ignorant.

Great observation Darrell, the post was in error and good of you to correct it, but those that look to attack anyone with an opposing view are called "hateful".
Notice how the word "Christian" was thrown in for good measure.
No need to "fact check" that I guess???

Mr Rader... thank you pointing out that a "mistake" was made.. obviously, due to Obama's advance team, it is understandable that the mistake was made in this case even though it was true a week earlier at Georgetown University ... Equally important is the fact that it was a mistake.. not hate. The idea that hate was part of this is absurd.
If any hate is coming... its coming from those who oppose Carolyn Hadden's opinion.... The lack of tolerance for opposing opinion is so often labeled as hateful... which to me is silly... Again, Mr Rader is right... she made a simple mistake... hate??? No way.

Sounds like you are spreading rumors about Christians... any facts to back uo what you state ... Sam... do you have a hard time with yourself? I am not Christian so I am not trying to defend them... but... I find many people spread rumors no matter what group they belong to... for you to single out Christians sounds more like a rumor you claim to have a hard time with..

Carolyn Hadden maybe didnt get all her facts exactly right... But why did president’s advance team insist that all religious symbols be covered in the place in which he was speaking in Georgetown ? According to the Detroit News, that is exactly what happened. You would have thought that Obama would have admonished his advance team... instead, the advance team request was granted and Obama said nothing.
Maybe someone can explain. Was the paper wrong?

The Detroit News published a column Tuesday April 21, 2009 that was about Catholic identity and the controversies sparked by President Obama’s visit to Georgetown and his planned speech at Notre Dame.
Here’s the Detroit News column:
President Barack Obama made an interesting comment on economics during his April 14 speech at Georgetown University. “We cannot rebuild this economy on the same pile of sand,” he said. “We must build our house upon a rock.”
It is quite appropriate that the parable was quoted at this Catholic university founded by Jesuits. Crucifixes, statues of Mary and other religious items are everywhere, revealing the rich tradition here.
Oddly, the president’s advance team insisted that all religious symbols be covered in the place in which he was speaking. Incredibly, Georgetown officials complied. At the request of the White House, university officials placed a cover over the letters IHS — the Greek abbreviation for the name of Jesus — during the president’s recent talk there.
This incident follows the ongoing uproar over Obama’s planned speech at Notre Dame, where he will be given an honorary doctorate, because of his pro-choice social policies.

You're right, it wasn't the gradutation speech, it was for an economic speech given shortly before (april 9th). Reason given (according to the article was that the Pres likes to have a black backdrop to his speechs, otherwise people might be distracted while he speaks.

Mr. Rader, at Notre Dame there is a huge depiction of Christ painted on the side of a tall structure. It is clearly visible from seats in the football stadium. It is Christ raising his arms as if to signal "touchdown".
