At this time, speech and debate is an extracurricular activity at Tokay High School, led by John Chapman. I want to encourage LUSD to make speech and debate a permanent class. This will have many benefits to the Tokay students.

I have been in the U.S. for three years, from Ecuador. Speech and debate has helped me to communicate better, write better and feel better about myself. My vocabulary and my confidence speaking English have increased.

John F. Kennedy once said, "I think debating in high school and college is most valuable training whether for politics, the law, business, or for service on community committees such as the PTA and the League of Women Voters. I wish we would have a good deal more debating in our educational institutions than we do now."

Mr. Chapman as a speech and debate coach is worthy of admiration. He has the tools, skills and enthusiasm to have a successful class. I beg LUSD to give Tokay High School students the opportunity to have a speech and debate class.
