Answers to questions about John Fogerty
I would like to address the article from Joe Guzzardi on John
Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival. The article stated that
"Lodi" reached Number 2 on the chart in 1969.
This isn't actually true. "Lodi" was the flip-side or the "B"
side of the single release.
It really made it to No. 52 on Billboard. The "A" side which
made it to Number two was "Bad Moon Rising". A few weeks ago
Creedence Clearwater Revisited came to Lodi with two original
members of CCR. The time they were here previously, they were
called The Golliwogs. At the concert, one of the original members
(I could not see who) told about being here and playing in a local
bar. He never said which bar.
Let's look at some of Mr. Guzzardi's questions. Did Fogerty take
a Greyhound to Lodi? I doubt that very much. With at least four
band members and their amps, guitars and drum set, I really kind of
doubt that. In 1965, I helped unload a U-Haul trailer of equipment
for a Sacramento band playing at the Armory here in town. They were
called, The New Breed. Their lead singer, Timothy B. Schmit, became
the bass player for The Eagles. I couldn't picture a Greyhound bus
with band equipment stored in the baggage compartment. Remember,
this had to be in the early '60s because the Army was trying to
draft John in 1966 at the age of 20 or 21.
The second question was Does Fogerty remember the name of the
tavern? As I pointed out earlier, one band member spoke about it,
but did not give any bar names. The third question about the
magazine being, "Rolling Stone." I don't think so unless John wrote
the song and performed in Lodi after 1967, the year Rolling Stone
first published.
The last question could be answered by the fact he disliked
Lodi's bar crowd so much, (he even wrote a song about it) "that if
he had a dollar for every song he sung, he would catch the next
train out of here." I believe John may have passed through here but
I don't believe he would want to get stuck here again.
