While watching the weekend talk shows, I noticed that there are more and more intellects wanting the U.S. to get out of Afghanistan because they feel it is a no-win situation we are facing. We told the Afghans that we were going to redo their entire infrastructure, but what have we accomplished after all these years?

Think of this: Afghanistan covers 250,000 square miles — close to the size of Texas — so rebuilding this country is a pipe dream; not to mention the cost in lives and money. Besides, how can they even pay us back when all they have is poppy plants?

Anyone with a brain in their head can see this undertaking would mean we would be tied up there for at least 50 years.

When I look at the state our own country is in, it makes me very angry to see what we try to accomplish in other countries while our own is going down the tubes.

I would like to reiterate my previous comments: The Soviet Union fought in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989. They suffered 15,000 dead and 470,000 sick and wounded. It cost them $300 billion. They killed over 1 million Afghans, wounded many more and flattened the entire country. Didn't we learn anything from the Soviet Union?

Some of our leaders have suggested an Afghan Marshal Plan. Well, I witnessed the Marshal Plan go into effect in Germany in 1948 to aid those countries in getting back on their feet, helping keep the Soviet Union in its place and eventually leading to its demise. However, in Afghanistan, 80 percent of the people are illiterate, so how could this country compete as a democratic state?

I repeat: Let's bring our brave boys and girls home, and spend all that money in the good ol' USA, where our own people are hurting big time.
