Letter: Our oceans are worth the risk

My letter about using a hydrogen bomb to clean up the mess in Japan received a lot of fallout. Why not an atomic bomb? It would just blow things up and move things around.

A hydrogen bomb burns as hot as the sun, and will vaporize everything. The nuclear plant is already radioactive and will be for the next thousand years. And what are they going to do with all the radioactive tanks full of radioactive sea water? And the radioactive groundwater that’s still running into our ocean? They want to freeze the ground between the plant and ocean. This is a really bad idea, for so many reasons.

We have 5,000 nuclear bombs. We need to give Japan the right-sized H-bomb for the job, and make sure the wind is blowing the right way.

My idea has its problems, too. As we learned in World War II, there’s a jetstream over Japan that comes right to us. And it’s always the problem we never see.

There is no cost too great to save our ocean.

Big problem calls for a small hydrogen bomb. Now, if you have a better idea that would do the job all at one time, let’s hear about it.

Mr. Kreis: While I don`t have a solution, I believe you cannot put out a fire with a can of gasoline.[sad]
