The local media has recently been full of reports of the horrendous car crash in Lodi in which an alleged intoxicated driver killed a family of five and an expected child, and put another child in the hospital. In the months before that, there were more local car crashes with fatalities that involved drivers that seemed to have been alcohol impaired.

Such crashes are obviously unacceptable, but I always wonder how the victimized families deal with their grief. When I lost my daughters Liesel and Elke at ages 16 and 15 so many years ago in a senseless head-on crash in Stockton, I found that the association with others who had experienced similar losses was a help.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving provides such an opportunity at their annual candlelight vigil in San Joaquin County. This year, the vigil will be held at 5 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Best Western Motel, 111, E. March Lane in Stockton. More information can be obtained from Judy Utter, victims specialist, at judy.utter@madd.org or by calling 1-800-426-6455, ext. 6635.

As victims cope with their losses during the upcoming holidays, all of us need to be aware of the dangers that exist on the roads and drive safe and sober. It can be dangerous out there!
