  Eric: Good points. ms collateral damage: another lie unearthed: The sale of ammunition – including Gw Pat.90 rounds for army-issue assault rifles – is subsidized by the Swiss government and made available at the many shooting ranges patronized by both private citizens and members of the militia. There is a regulatory requirement that ammunition sold at ranges must be used there.

  If every gun owner wants to go through a few weeks of training/screening and then keeps their ammo sealed and available for regular inspection let's have that discussion otherwise lets keep the Swiss out of this debate. They don't have an Army, their healthcare is universal and federally controlled and their society encourages strong social safety nets if the gun lobby wants to use Switzerland as a societal model I'm sure the gun control faction can have that discussion.

  Up until October 2007, a specified personal retention quantity of government-issued personal ammunition (50 rounds 5.56 mm / 48 rounds 9mm) was issued as well, which was sealed and inspected regularly to ensure that no unauthorized use had taken place.[4] The ammunition was intended for use while traveling to the army barracks in case of invasion.

  In October 2007, the Swiss Federal Council decided that the distribution of ammunition to soldiers shall stop and that all previously issued ammo shall be returned. By March 2011, more than 99% of the ammo has been received. Only special rapid deployment units and the military police still have ammunition stored at home today.[5]

  I wonder if YOU are reporting back to Officer Tonn's family all of the instances in which you have invoked his name in this forum to ridicule people and to make your assinine remarks.

  You should be ashamed of yourself.

  The bottom line is, anyone in law enforcement goes to work everyday with the possibility of tragedy due to the nature of their work. I'm sorry, but if I had a magic wand I would remove all crime from the face of the Earth. But it doesn't work that way.

  The point ms collateral damage is that they ARE armed. If criminals know this they are less likely to rob a home. I hope that you sent a sympathy card to the Galt police officer's family explaining your position on his death.

  I think that should have read, "Clouded Truth."

  Members of Switzerland's military are divided into the regular army and the militia and a small percentage of professional soldiers (according to Wikipedia). The militia are "conscripted male citizens aged 20-34 (in special cases up to age 50)," and are required to keep their military issued weapons and all personal weapons at home. As of 2007, they do not keep any ammunition at home.

  Mr. Johanson's narrative seems to indicate that ALL citizens are issued "the finest submachine guns" - a strange assertion considering Switzerland's policy of neutrality. The Swiss military does not participate in any armed conflicts in other countries and only serves in peacekeeping missions around the world.

  To be honest, as a proponent of the 2nd Amendment and an gun owner, I have not been overly excited about the Administration's gun control efforts to date.

  Assault rifles (as defined in the proposed legislation) are guns for morons. No one I know has a mountable bayonet and/or a grenade launcher and pistol grips on semiautomatic rifles (as opposed to true automatic rifles) only serve to make them more inaccurate.

  High capacity magazines are a bit more problematic, but, at a constitutional level, I don't really see how a 10 round limit is a problem.

  The real issue here is at the state level with all of the talk about defacto bans (like NY) and, here in CA, limits on ammo purchases.
