The choice is clear for the Lodi Unified School District board, Area 4 — Calvin Young. His priority is the students. He is independent, a man of integrity and a fiscal conservative. Motivate by his daughter with special needs, he has served on various boards for nearly 20 years — being a champion for children and adults with developmental disabilities. He is currently President of the board of Valley Mountain Regional Center overseeing services to over 9,000 individuals with developmental disabilities.

Calvin Young understands that, just like our family budget, we cannot spend more than we have. Because of the great recession and severe reductions in education funding from Sacramento, our school board (just like every other school district in the state), has had to make tough budget decisions. Unfortunately, the economic crisis is not over and Sacramento continues to play games with the budget. We need Calvin Young with his financial and budget background to help minimize the impact to students.

Calvin Young has led the effort to secure additional funding for our schools and improve operations. His efforts have resulted in over $7.5 million in grants for the classroom and after school programs. He led the effort for energy conservation and recycling which is saving over $1 million per year. His financial background was instrumental in structuring the solar generation project which is estimated to save over $1.7 million over the next 16 years. Because of his financial and operations background, he has made numerous other recommendations which will save additional moneys which can be redirected to the classroom. He is also working with classroom teachers and administrators to enhance the use of technology in the classroom as a toll to better engage students and improve learning.

As a retired teacher, please join me in voting for Calvin Young for Lodi School Board, Area 4.

I also meant to post that much of the $7.5M in grants are from state programs for low performing schools to get tutoring. The grants were because LUSD was doing so well, but because they are so bad.

Btw, how do we contact Mr. Young? I looked at his website, at the Lodi Unified School district website and NOTHING. It's almost as if he doesn't want anyone, anywhere to be able to contact him? Cassel has an email and same with Jones and Davis. Come on Mr. Young.

This almost verbatim, with the exception of the typos, from Mr. Young's website, is this written by him?

How much did he save the school district when he renewed the supe's contract (from an earlier post Mr. Young did not respond to):

The main thing people are worried about is how you could sign a contract with a superindent who has a 10% approval rate and then not even know what you signed:

"The original contract said she needed to be satisfactory in every (evaluated) category to be eligible for an extension offer with a majority vote from the board. The amendment says she needs an average score of satisfactory or better, and she shall be given an extension," Young said. "That was a surprise to me and my fellow board members."

All I know is that over the past 4 years, class sizes have gone up dramtically, we have few honors classes, children are being switched from classes in mid-years. My neighbors children aged 6 and 8 had to switch teachers in the middle of the school year, that's terrible planning.
