Letter: Let’s fight to grant freedom to all people, not just our own religion

Many letters seem to be published in Lodi News-Sentinel bemoaning the removal of religion in certain institutions such as schools, military and government meetings; many more crying over the loss of faith and worship to Jesus. Something goes forgotten in many of these letters, and that is freedom. Freedom is something I celebrate in this country as an atheist, and I will fight for any individual’s religion, creed or philosophy.

I am happy that I cannot be denied employment due to my atheism, and that neither can my neighbor for his or her religious choice. My children will not have to be forced to pray or chant “... one country under God ...” when they do not believe such a thing exists, while my neighbor’s child will still have the ability to lead Bible studies and pray at their locker every morning.

Countless humans have been slaughtered because of their faith, or lack thereof, and they still are in other countries to this day. Others are imprisoned today and may never see their families again. Christians still get crucified, and atheists still get burned at stakes.

Instead of fighting against religion, or for “keeping God in school, government or military,” I admonish our brethren to fight for something. Let us fight for freedom for all, and celebrate the freedoms we do have as well as the ones our neighbors enjoy.

Sarah Tygert
