Hutchins Street Square pool needs repairs — and $1 from you
Many News-Sentinel readers have fond memories of good times spent in the Hutchins Street Square pool, memories which extend back through generations.
Maybe you remember using the second-story pool during your physical education at Lodi Union High School. You may have learned to swim or dive in those classes. Some of you recall daring extracurricular swimming parties undertaken at midnight when the principal wasn’t around.
More recently, you may have stretched your muscles in an arthritis class. You could have challenged your heartbeat in a cardio class. Perhaps you have taken Red Cross lifesaving classes at the pool. And many of you have taken your children or grandchildren to family swim to escape the winter or the summer heat.
Our pool has been good to us. Now it needs our help. Because of repair costs and due to vandalism, the pool needs more money than the city has. If each one of us who had been blessed by the pool and its programs would send just $1 to add to the maintenance and repair, we could keep the pool in fine condition.
Please make your check payable to The Hutchins Street Square Foundation, P.O. Box 2278, Lodi, CA 95241. In the memo section, please note “for pool repairs.” Your donation to the Foundation is deductible, as allowed by law, under IRS Code section 501(c)(3), FEIN 94-2655990.

Nice of you to try to raise money to maintain this city facility since the city council chooses not to maintain it. I repeat---the city chooses not to maintain this facility.
It's ridiculous to say the city cannot afford it. This is their choice.
I attended a city council meeting last year where the council voted to divert $200,000 from the general fund to a pet project--- the grape bowl.
It's ironic the city/city council is now spending a million dollars to widen a couple blocks of Hutchins St. but has no money to maintain this facility.
The city recently increased the fees charged for use of this facility and though fees will not cover all the costs of operating and maintaining it, many city facilities suck up more city resources and money than this one.
Priorities.
