I would like to thank all of the people who sent me congratulatory emails as well as Joelle Milholm, Scott Howell, Richard Hanner and Marty Weybret along with the entire staff of the Lodi News-Sentinel for everyone’s support and encouragement after a story of mine took second place at the California Newspaper Publishers Association awards and was featured in an LNS story by Milholm last week.

I also want to thank the Armstrong and Bailon families for sharing their remarkable experiences that led to this award-winning story. I could not have done it without them. Again, thank all of you very much.

Mr. Baumbach obviously meant for his comments to be posted in response to the "Officer Barrow, you are appreciated" letter that was also printed in the LNS today.

Mr Baker... Thank you for your letter. It helped me to understand how my grandfather might have felt years ago. He was a Lodi farmer who at age 70, had his old farm house burn down and had no insurance. All he had left was his shop with equipment and tools... He could not get a permit to rebuild for some reason and was having theft problems ,... He decided to sleep in his shop on a cot ( for months) ,with a shotgun within arms reach, to protect his property. He was a kind old man who just wanted to preserve what had taken him a lifetime to build... until I read your letter, I really had never appreciated what he went through. He too, like you, was putting himself in danger. I now wonder what he was thinking and feeling as he was alone in a precarious situation... I can understand how you must appreciate this officers support and understanding of what this means to you.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
