I read with interest that the Lodi Chamber of Commerce had announced their endorsements for the San Joaquin Delta College Board of Trustees. I currently serve as the Area 5 trustee, which covers everything east of Highway 99 in San Joaquin County. Oddly, I was not contacted by the Chamber for any input or comment, so I must conclude that the Chamber had predetermined who it would support, without taking any fair and balanced approach.

I can understand the desire for change in Lodi, due to what has been defined by the Chamber as "broken promises." Regardless, and as every elected official knows, the broken promises extend from Sacramento to the raiding of local government and school budgets.

I, too, support increased access for students throughout the Delta district. Without a commitment from the state for funding growth and expansion, this will be difficult for any district in California. I am very encouraged by the outreach of our local business and industry leaders, and other elected leaders, to find ways to contribute to the support our public education institutions so desperately need. Nonetheless, we cannot continue to believe that government can and will supply every resource needed to train the workforce of the future. It simply has not happened in the last 10 years and more.

Political promises in an election year are cheap and easy, but do not amount to what voters need to make decisions. I am disappointed in the Chamber for taking such a simple and one-sided approach to their endorsement process.
