We are having a very busy summer at the McFarland Ranch, 8899 Orr Road, Galt. We have many members who, without their dedication to the Galt Historical Society, would not have accomplished many projects.

In August, we had a barn raising for a shed needed for our equipment to keep the ranch looking good for the enjoyment of many. It has been in the making for about three years, and is now 99 percent completed. Why am I telling you this? This is what can be done with dedicated people who want to make a difference. They work very hard and put their blood, sweat and tears into a place that will benefit not only you as adults but the schoolchildren, too. Yes, this Living History Ranch is open to the public and has special programs for the children. This building will store tractors, lawn mowers and much more.

A lot of volunteers work on the projects days and evenings, without any pay but a feeling of serving. It takes a special kind of person to do this. Serving is a special talent that our maker must have given to them, and they have used it well. Some of the names are Ron Jacobson, Judy Jacobson, Francis Jacobson, Herb Schramm, Earl Frey, Jesse Roberts, Jim Snow, Carol Snow, Nancy Stigelmayer, Gary Berreth, Lee Balis and the Mormon Church, which helped with the barn raising and more. It is our wish to thank them for their great help and volunteering.

The McFarland Living History Ranch is a beautiful restored home of John McFarland who came to the Sacramento Valley in 1857.

If you would like to see a living ranch, we invite you to come to our many activities. The next one is the “Old Car Show” on Sept. 29, 2013. With every event you can go back in history, to the time of the early 1800s. The ranch is breathtaking beautiful, quiet and serene. We thank our faithful members for all their work, that we may enjoy this wonderful “gem” in Galt.

Check out our website at www.galthistory.org, and find out how you can become a part of the Galt Area Historical Society and learn more about the area.
