Got eggs? Back in March, with little fanfare and public input, changes to sections of the city’s zoning code were made. In the process, a long-standing provision allowing homeowners to keep up to three egg-laying backyard hens was removed.

I encourage all budget-conscious, health conscious, nature-loving and back-to-the-land advocating Lodians to contact our city council and encourage them to reinstate this provision. Even our city attorney has his little flock. Shouldn’t the rest of us, if we are so inclined, have the freedom to do so?

Then you have obviously not had a backyard free range chicken egg. The difference is striking.

For those folks interested in the backyard chicken issue, the Lodi Public Library will be having a program on Backyard Chickens. Master Gardener Lee Miller will be discussing the issue from local laws to benefits and drawbacks to selecting the best breeds and everything else in between. The program will be in the Community Room on August 29th 7 - 9 pm. The Lodi Public Library is located at 201 W. Locust St. 333-5503 www.lodi.gov/library
