America is being destroyed from within

The letters by Sam West, "Re-elect Obama and the U.S. will be just like Europe," and Paul Shoemake, "We need a better caliber person as president," were excellent commentary.

Mr. West's pointing out of Obama's election mantra that he will "fundamentally transform America" is a direct assault on the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and a statement that the man hates America — as it stands — and with his wife saying this is the first time in her 45 years of life that she is proud to be an American, says she feels the same.

It's not the job of this president or any president to fundamentally transform America. It's the job of the president to uphold the fundamental principles of the Constitution — reform, yes, but transform, no!

Mr. Shoemake's statement of his service of three decades in the military, being a registered Democrat and his disillusionment with Obama reminds me of my dad who passed away in 2005 at 83 years old. He also started out as a Democrat, went Republican and then became fed up with both. He was moved to tears at times when he would claim that the U.S. government had become just like the nations he had fought against in World War II and Korea, and mourned for those he had seen die for a nation that would be foreign to them.

We're being destroyed from within by a socialistic bureaucracy whose overriding goal is its own survival at the cost of national security, which as the historian Thomas Cahill asserts was one of the major reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire. Lincoln said in 1838, "At what point ... is the approach of danger to be expected. I answer, if it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen we must live through all time, or die by suicide."

Socialism and a Constitutional Republic cannot exist together. They cancel each other out, and if America chooses socialism, it is committing suicide.
