Letter: New Grape Bowl design is disappointing

This letter is in response to the letter “Visitors’ side of the renovated Grape Bowl poorly designed,” by Rex Defenbaugh, published on Sept. 11 in the Lodi News-Sentinel. I couldn’t have agreed with you more — well, maybe a little more!

I, too, was so disappointed in the layout of the concession and restroom building and the very long walk up the ramps! Whoever the engineer/architect was, one would have thought a model of the renovation they were hired to do —a premodel layout — would have been done to scale! It’s also a long walk on the home team side!

Another feature that would have been nice is to have a handrail down the center aisles leading to the bleachers. Kids and others would be less likely to run into others while trying to get to their seating area. It would also be an asset to the adults!

The field looks great, and don’t neglect our great American Flag!

Thanks to all the coaches in giving of their time to help our young ones develop into fine young women and men.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Jack Fiori and his group of volunteers for their hard work over the past several years for raising the funds to make this project possible. There would have been no project if this group were not dedicated to it. I recognize the project has not been completed and the group is still soliciting donations but was has been accomplished thus far is to be commended. This will be one of the most used facilities in the City and will be a real asset to the community. Thanks again Jack and your volunteers. Keep up the good work. I'm hoping those who have been critical of the project will jump in and help you out with donations to finish the project.

Donations? Cut some of those unnecessary good ol' boy positions and the black money hole at HSS that funds the feely good good ol' boys programs and the million bucks from Waste management and a decent architect and contractor and you'd have ample funds to make the Grape Bowl maybe half what it used to be. You need to go back to newspaper reporting, Mr. Hood?

Please refer to my letter that was published Saturday (link below). The renovations related to the Americans With Disabilties Act. We welcome donations to pay for other needed improvements.

And the good ol' boys Josh and Jackson just bashed me for saying the same thing. Thank you for your letter and comments showing your disappointment with the Grape Bowl. What do you expect from the same drab old local contractors and council group? They could at least put a fence up on Stockton street to hide the monster?

I keep thinking that what we currently see at the Grape Bowl is just a first phase and more MUST be planned to make it a quality stadium. The field looks great, but the rest is not inviting for spectators.

I have to agree about the poorly designed access to the grape bowl. We saw several confused visitor spectators trying to figure out how to get to the other side and had to direct some. I was hoping that might be setting it up like Lincoln, it is similar except for the visitor access. After all the work that has been put into it, I have to say it is disappointing to say the least., hopefully there are some more plans in the works to complete that side. And yes railings would be nice, those bleacher steps are terrible and I have seen older people fall on them.
