This is a response to the letter “A 3-foot variance for bicycles on the road is not practical,” by Ed Walters on Oct. 16.

Thank you for your anti-bike letter. These riders do their best to abide by the law, so please do not designate where we can and cannot ride. Share the road.

Kevin: I agree with the first part of your post, however the second part is most likely to happen. During my post of Oct. 16 I got ripped, as I knew I would. To be honest I have never seen a bike rider stop, or even come close to a stop, power through. San Joaquin county consists of very narrow roads and in my post I named a few. However I left out the most traveled road, and that would be Hwy. 12. Attempting to ride a bike from Lower Sac. to Rio Vista or any point before is total foolishness. The road is narrow and will not allow a bike, especially when two trucks pass at the same time. Evidently Ms. Jolly rides a bike, however I am not sure in which catagory she fits. Depending on what paper or city you read about on the internet, especially in SF, there is always a bike rider under a bus or hit by a car on a daily basis, and makes me wonder when the bike rider parks his/her bike and gets in their car, does the mindset change to, get out of my way you +++++++ bike rider.

I agree with Mr. Paglia regarding the need for proper gear when riding bicycles around Lodi (or anywhere for that matter). But it seems as if the helmet law that was put into effect quite a few years ago is now being violated even by the youngest of cyclists. Considering that these devices are quite light, I can’t understand why they aren’t worn by not only those 18 or younger, but anyone who rides a bike.

I suppose it’s going to take a significant disaster to occur before attention is again given to this problem. And what a shame that will be.

To be fair there are TWO kinds of riders:

The cyclist who wears proper gear and obeys the traffic laws, mostly.

    And

The Commuter who is using the bike to get from point A to B. This includes students and others who couldn't careless about safety gear, they just want to get where they are going.
