Hello, my name is Sgt. 1st Class Jon Cox. I am stationed in Baumholder, Germany with the 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team 3-4 Infantry Regiment. I am currently deployed in Herat, Afghanistan. I have a 63-man infantry detachment assigned to me, and received numerous boxes from Lodi's Support Our Troops — Holiday Cheer Box Drive. I distributed these care packages out to my soldiers and they were extremely appreciative of them. We are stationed kind of in a remote location, so mail, etc., takes a long time to get here.

I have a lot of young soldiers and they are really impressionable. We hear a lot of bad things coming from the media about how the people in the United States really don't like this war we are in. When I hand them care packages from people in the U.S. whom they have never met or probably will never meet, their eyes light up. They finally realize that there are people in the U.S. who care for their well-being and are being thought about.

I would like to personally thank Marcia Dempsey and all of the volunteers who take the time — and money — out of their busy schedules to think about us. I wish I could take a picture of how soldiers react to receiving the packages and notes. Some of my soldiers have personally written back to the students and people in Lodi who have sent letters and packages this way.

I salute you and wish you the best in everything you all do. Once again, thank you for your care and compassion. God bless.

Sgt. 1st Class Jon A. Cox
