Have I understood this correctly? City Manager Steve Schwabauer does not want to renew Visit Lodi!’s contract for the requested five-year term because of impending increases in Public Employees Retirement System costs?

Visit Lodi! is looking for approximately $105,000 this year to market the city to out-of-town visitors. That’s new money coming into town. That’s revenue our merchants won’t see if these “customers” haven’t heard about us, don’t know what we offer or even how to get here. That’s sales tax and transient occupancy tax Lodi will never collect. How many hamburgers would McDonald’s sell if they stopped advertising?

We should continue Visit Lodi!’s funding. The economic benefit to our city is obvious, and curtailing our efforts would be short-sighted.
