In response to your article on dog attacks, I would like to start by saying I am very sorry to hear about the attacks in Lodi and Stockton. However, requiring a muzzle on a dog because of their breed is only going to further the stigma of certain breeds.

Second, as one who grew up with Rottweilers, Chihuahuas and now a dog parent of an English bulldog, I must say It has nothing to do with breed but with training, training, training.

If anything, the local city shelter should find a way to institute a required dog training class (even if held by them personally) in addition to the approval of your landlord (if a renter) and introductions to other family pets before adopting.

I think that there are a lot of irresponsible people who do not take the time to train their dogs, purebred or otherwise. And not to compare children to dogs, but just like with children, if one doesn't teach them right from wrong they will run wild making their parents look bad due to bad parenting.

Has anyone thought of fining adopted dog owners if they cannot show proof of training within a reasonable timeline? In addition, has anyone considered that if training is not completed within a certain time frame, the dog will be taken back with no reimbursement of adoption fees?

This is not just a problem caused by lack of training, but a lack of responsibility on the part of our city animal shelter, due to adopting out dogs without inspecting homes and verifying adopter information that has been given. One should be required to have their home inspected, as the Animal Friends Connection does and many others in the surrounding community.

Muzzles, no. Simply train your dogs — that is, unless you want to create even more aggressive dogs. Training does not need to be expensive. This is something the animal shelter should consider doing. Not only will it show they are there to help, it will bring in more revenue for them to help more animals.
