Letter: Hutchins Street Square lawn needs maintenance

On Labor Day, during the balloon lift-off, we noticed some lack of maintenance problems on the western lawn area along Rose Street.

The drinking fountain on the northwest corner had a clogged drain, and the basin was coated in perhaps a year’s worth of algae. All of the benches (donated by Tokay Rotary Club) in this area were in disrepair, especially one that was missing six slats and which had an iron fitting protruding that could be very dangerous to playful kids. The trash containers were in bad repair. There was one lighting fixture on the south side in bad need of repair, and the basketball playing area needs new netting. There were a lot of brown spots in the lawn.

It seems to me that these items could easily be repaired with minimum expense. This is the Hutchins Street Square, showpiece of Lodi, and it deserves better or improved maintenance.

Doug, don't tell me you've turned on Jeff Hood now.

Looks like Mr. Fowler is right about the trashy appearance of HSS. With all those high paid positions there it seems way too many chiefs and not enough Indians. What's wrong with those doing community service there? It used to be kept up nicely when they were there unless they still are but are well connected or related to the good ol' boys and just ride out their community service time at the pool. Everything Lodi owns is in shambles after laying of all but the well connected maintenance crews and subbing everything out to cheap, non-union local contractors that seem to do shabby, but expensive work. CC meeting minutes show most projects running way over cost and extra funding is constantly an issue at council meetings. It seems the city keeps this stable of expensive, shabby contractors by giving them these cheap bids and sharing the profits between themselves on many projects. And these same Lodi contractors are always te highest bidders on out of town public works projects? Who gives them their inside info at pw to allow them to bid so low?

Rev. Jackson, thanks for your rant. What do you expect from Hutchins with Loel digging their grubby fingers into the government welfare checks doled out from HSS to those who need it the least. I'd expect nothing better from a dysfunctional group run by an ex-newspaper reporter with an unlimited debit account to dump many useless funds at HSS to supplement those who are well off. Like the low cost child care program for those with 60K salaries and good connections. HSS is a waste of government welfare funds to those who already live comfortably in livable, lovable Lodi. Welcome back Rev. Jackson.

So nice to see Doug is back online posting his negative rumblings again after his illness. Yes, Doug, I know about that. I have people everywhere *insert sinister laughter*.

FWIW Doug, HSS provides a lot of services for the taxpayers & citizens (T&C, lol!). It was never thought to be self sufficient. Was Parks & Rec ever self sufficient? What about the Police & Fire? No, of course not. All departments provide something to the public, and all are funded by taxpayers. Our elected officials & city staff are those in charge on how to spend those tax dollars. If you don't like what is being done I suggest you take positive action, perhaps running for office. Don't sit behind your computer and continue to blast everything you don't like.

As for the lawn, Mr Fowler elects to look in a garden and only see the few weeds while not appreciating the beautiful flowers. Don't sweat the small stuff Mike.

You mean the "black hole" called HSS that loses 3/4 of a million a year due to mismanagement and waste?
