Change of administrators is not good for Lodi Unified School District students

As a Tokay High parent and teacher, I am alarmed at the high school administrator shuffle that the Lodi Unified School District Board of Education announced, which will affect all four comprehensive high schools.

Since beginning my teaching career in 1988, I have seen my share of administrators. I have greatly appreciated the stability that our site has had in our top administration for the last several years.

The dedication that our vice principal, Martha Dent, has shown to Tokay cannot be overstated. Her experience as a teacher, assistant principal and vice principal has allowed her to truly understand and put into action plans that work here.

Over the years, she has established a rapport and trust that has allowed for continuity of not only programs, but a culture of professionalism and improvement. The ongoing work she does with those new to our site has allowed the expectations and Tokay culture to take root in a real way.

She has created a safe environment for us to analyze campuswide practices, with the paramount question always being, "Is it good for students?" Her communication is honest and authentic.

She knows and appreciates the Tokay community, faculty, parents and students. She supports Tokay to her purple and gold core, and her dedication to continual improvement here is unparalleled. Her work at Tokay is not done.

There has been little or no rationale by the board for moving someone who plays such a pivotal role and who has been instrumental in putting Tokay on a positive trajectory. The manner in which these moves were announced, by email, with not even the courtesy of a phone call, showed a demonstrable lack of respect to all of the administrators involved.

To disrupt all four high schools for what appears to be no solid educational reason is greatly disturbing to me as an employee, but more importantly, as a parent.

I can only hope the board will ask itself the only question that really matters about this massive administrator shuffle: "Is it good for students?" The answer is a resounding "no."
