In the July 16 edition there was a letter from Sonia Glick, “The president should not pick and choose which laws he likes,” stating our president’s latest family vacation cost us taxpayers $100,000.

The actual estimated cost was $100 million. This included moving some of our Navy ships for added security as well as the cost of Air Force One and transporting armored vehicles, Secret Service and other security personnel.

I am sure they all had a great time.

How much did Bush's vacation in Iraq cost the taxpayers? Bloomberg News estimates the cost to the US at more than 800 BILLION dollars (not to mention the thousands of dead American soldiers and tens of thousands dead Iraqis).

    From Wiki:

"Bush has worked to reduce the HIV/AIDS epidemics in Africa, stop the spread of malaria, and rebuild broken nations from their genocidal pasts. One of the most notable programs initiated by Bush is the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief Program (PEPFAR).

The U.S. government has spent some $44 billion on the project since 2003 (a figure that includes $7 billion contributed to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, a multilateral organization), saving an estimated 5 million lives."

The US Government (UNDER GW BUSH) has spent some $44 BILLION fighting AIDS in AFRICA.

How much did he spend in the US to fight AIDS? Oh...that's right...only gays get AIDS in the US so, as a born again Christian, Bush found no need to spend anything domestically.

Back in the good ole' USA:

"In 2007, Bush opposed and vetoed State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) legislation, which was added by the Democrats onto a war funding bill and passed by Congress.

The SCHIP legislation would have significantly expanded federally funded health care benefits and plans to children of some low-income families from about six million to ten million children. It was to be funded by an increase in the cigarette tax."

All for Africa - nothing for US children.

Misplaced priorities? Or running for The Great White King of Africa?

And you wonder why people think you are a racist?

Just curious - did you question the Bush trips to Africa?

    From the White House website:

    http://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/infocus/africa/trip2008/

AND George's continued visits where he spends his taxpayer funded retirement plan on "spreading good will?" ARE HE AND LAURA running for KING and QUEEN of Africa?

You wouldn't even dream of making a comment like that about the great white hunter, would you, Mr. Chapman?

Just what is a "typical liberal," Mr. Chapman?

Just someone who disagrees with your antiquated views, or are they really, really dangerous.

FYI - I don't consider myself a "liberal," despite your narrow opinion that anyone who has ideas different from yours HAS to be a liberal.

Nice Bob, you really don't get it. What did we get when W went to Crawford and chopped wood and cleared brush? Oh he dreamed up invading Iraq, which resulted in the deaths of thousands. King of Africa.....ok I won't bring up racism this time how about just plain stupidity. Bottom line is you want an old dumb Lillie white rich Christian phony as president. Too bad the next one is going to be women.

Like most liberals, when your arguments regarding Obama are not strong enough to defend your position, you resort to racist claims. Typical liberal.

Yeah...... I'll say this: "I don't know how much it cost for President Obama to go where ever he went" and "where ever he went, I'm positive he met with and collaborated with dignitaries and leaders of the foreign countries he traveled to" and "Meeting the leaders of other countries while actually in those countries makes it easier to collaborate in the future" and " people who complain about this President traveling to foreign countries only do so because they lack and demonstrate the lack of understanding of world affairs and the interactions of nations on the most elementary level". (It's a kind way of saying you're ignorant)

Maybe since you don't like the President (actually the terms "loath" and "detest" come to mind when thinking of you and President Obama), you could move to another country until 2025 which, if they're lucky, the republicans may have garnered enough votes to slip back into the white house.

Whatever your decision, be assured that you and your comments have absolutely 0 effect on this President and his success so far. By extension, your comments and views will have no effect on any elections. You, people like you, and the views and positions you and others like you have no effect on anything. What ever you say has been said before, and said better by a better class of individuals then yourself. Their views and positions they pronounce have no effect on the electorate at large. This means you have 0 impact and influence nothing. As the rest of the country, especially the new voters who are signing up and are of differing ethnic, cultural, and racial backgrounds, will (in our lifetime) be those who are shoveling the last bit of dirt into the GOP's grave.

Fortunately it was a working vacation, with visits to several foreign leaders. So you seem to have thrown out a nice round number did it come from a reliable source, cause I see very little of that in the letters here.

    Great news!!

Robert Chapman is ACTUALLY ADVOCATING that 100 MILLION DOLLARS be given to the American public who need it so much more than we need to have the president doing dumb ass diplomatic tours and being protected while he's at it!

Let's see....who should we give 100 Million dollars to? Detroit? Fund Obamacare? What's YOUR choice, Mr. Chapman, since YOU suggested it?

Oh look....even a democrat thinks it costs too much. Maybe I'll reconside....no. No I won't. A member of the House of Representatives doesn't have the responsibilities that the President does. If the President goes to a foreign country "on vacation" that is only a small part of the story. Maybe the first family will take advantage of the opportunity, but the President will be working and meeting with leaders of what ever country he goes to.

Rebuttals like finding a democrat who thinks it's a bad idea, only work on conservatives who have a much lower set of expectations.

It is of some curiosity that the news story is dated June 2, but that the President was in Tanzania and other African countries on July 2. Sounds like Barrow is only giving lip service to loudmouths in his district (conservatives). Another case of a politician saying something to satisfy constituents, but knowing it's just for show.

From the Washington Times, June 2, 2013:
Rep. John Barrow blasted President Obama’s weeklong trip to Africa that begins Wednesday, urging the president to “lead by example” by not taking such an expensive visit..
The trip to Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania will carry a price tag estimated between $60 million and $100 million. (security expenses are never revealed)
“No one here questions the need for security for our commander in chief,” Mr. Barrow, Georgia DEMOCRAT, said. “But we do question the need for such expensive trips when so many folks across the country are being forced to cut back because Congress can’t get its act together.”
“A trip of this magnitude isn’t unusual, but these are hard times,” he continued. “One hundred million dollars could be better used to keep folks on the job. I urge the president, and everyone at the federal level, to lead by example, and not take the fact that Congress can’t get its act together and rub that in the faces of hard-working Americans.”

Even some DEMOCRATS can see the hypocrisy exhibited by Obama's arrogant "do as I say, not as I do" attitude. Sequestration should only be felt by the "little people", not the royalty in the White House.

The only reason the diplomatic trip was characterized as a "vacation" (thanks in great part to Joe Guzzardi's demagoguery and absolute disgust that the Obama's were just about the most pretentious couple because they enjoy vacationing at Martha's Vineyard) is because "arrogant" Michelle and those non-"trouble-making" children went along on the trip to Africa. The First Lady was traveling, for the most part, separately and was performing her own diplomatic missions.

(For reference - see Jerry Kinderman's column on how disgusted he is with the First Family, but thinks they should be entitled to any vacation they desire.)

Here's a good interview to get a REAL perspective of the trip from someone familiar with the region and the motives for this travel:

    http://www.npr.org/2013/06/23/194819200/africa-trip-is-obamas-pitch-to-broaden-relationships

But I am sure this is wasted on the typical individual who believes the president just wanted to waste tax-payer dollars.

I hate to promote a conspiracy theory style program, but there are several good segments on the History Channel's "America's Book of Secrets" about what it takes to protect ANY president of the US from the White House security to the Secret Service to the president's vehicles (plane, auto, helicopter), etc.

If anyone thinks that it is cheap to protect the most powerful leader in the world - no matter who occupies the office - they are in for a surprise. If you don't like it, try living in any other first, second or third world country where leaders are picked off like friends on a Dick Cheney bird hunt.

Eric, Joanne: It's just easier to make up a higher and higher number. No one on the right is going to challenge it, in fact they will magnify it. Cons always have a problem when President Obama goes anywhere, but their GHB was always "working" while on vacation. Plus he had the "war" in Iraq to run, plus his and his advisor's plans to drive the American economy into the ground.

The President cannot refuse Secret Service protection and they will not allow him to fly commercial or take a bus or a train. So yeah, it costs money for him to travel than it does to throw a couple of things in the back of the Ford Pinto and go to Yosemite.

Perhaps Jim you could back your statement with a reference of some kind. I could say that "actual estimates" came in at 5 dollars or 500 billion dollars but without some reference it's meaningless.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
